1.Sorting

Sorting helps to organize data in a specific order, so it becomes easier to analyze.

Ascending order arranges values from smallest to largest (A–Z, 1–10).
Descending order arranges values from largest to smallest (Z–A, 10–1).

Example: Ranking countries by GDP from highest to lowest helps policymakers identify economic leaders at a glance.

2.Filtering

Filtering allows you to narrow down large datasets to only the information you need. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of rows, you can instantly view entries that meet certain criteria.

Example: From a dataset of all Nigerian states, filtering can display only those with populations above 1 million, or only the states within a specific region.

This is especially useful in research and reporting, where focus is needed on subsets of data.

3.Formulas

Formulas are the building blocks of data analysis in spreadsheets, automating calculations and saving time. They allow you to process data quickly without manually computing each value. Some common examples include:

*=SUM(A1:A10) → Adds all the numbers between cells A1 and A10.

Useful for calculating total revenue, population, or exam scores.

*=AVERAGE(B1:B10) → Finds the mean of values in the selected range.

Useful for finding average income, average age, or average sales per month.

*=IF(condition, value_if_true, value_if_false) → Performs a logical test and returns results depending on whether the condition is true or false.

Example: =IF(C2>18, "Adult", "Minor") can classify individuals based on age.

*=VLOOKUP(value, table, column, FALSE) → Searches for a specific value in the first column of a table and returns related information from another column.

Example: If you have a table of student IDs and their scores, VLOOKUP can quickly return the score for a given student ID.

Together, these basic functions transform spreadsheets into tools for decision-making, problem-solving, and storytelling with data.

Creating Simple Charts for Visualization

1.Bar Chart

A bar chart is used to compare quantities across different categories by representing values with rectangular bars. The length or height of each bar corresponds to the value it represents. This makes it easy to identify which categories are larger or smaller at a glance.

Example: Comparing literacy rates across states in Nigeria. Each state would have its own bar, allowing us to quickly see which states have higher literacy levels and where improvements may be needed.

2.Pie Chart

A pie chart is useful for showing how a whole is divided into parts, expressed as proportions or percentages. Each slice of the pie represents a category’s contribution to the total. This visualization is best when there are a limited number of categories, and when the goal is to highlight relative shares.

Example: Showing the share of sectors (agriculture, industry, services) in Nigeria’s GDP. The chart would clearly illustrate which sector contributes the most to the economy and how others compare.

3.Line Chart

A line chart is ideal for tracking changes or trends over time. Data points are plotted and connected by lines, making it easy to observe increases, decreases, or patterns such as cycles or fluctuations. Line charts are especially effective for time-series data.

Example: Tracking Nigeria’s inflation trend from 2010 to 2024. The line would show how inflation rates rose or fell over the years, providing insight into economic stability and helping policymakers or businesses make informed decisions.

Charts make data more understandable, highlighting trends, patterns, or anomalies.

Open Data Sources

Open data refers to information that is freely available for anyone to access, use, and share. These datasets are often provided by governments, international organizations, and research institutions to promote transparency, accountability, and innovation.

Some key open data sources include:

World Bank Data → A comprehensive source of global economic and development indicators such as GDP, poverty rates, education, health, and climate change data. It allows researchers to compare countries, track progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and analyze long-term development trends.
Data.gov → The official U.S. government’s open data portal, hosting thousands of datasets across multiple sectors such as health, agriculture, energy, and finance. It demonstrates how governments use open data to drive innovation and improve public services.
Nigeria Open Data Portal → A platform offering socio-economic and demographic statistics relevant to Nigeria, including data on population, education, health, and public finance.

Other Key Sources:

UN Data → Statistical information collected by the United Nations covering areas like population, environment, and trade.
WHO (World Health Organization) → Global health statistics including disease prevalence, mortality rates, and health system performance.
IMF (International Monetary Fund) → Economic and financial datasets such as balance of payments, inflation, and fiscal indicators.
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS Nigeria) → The official source of national data on Nigeria’s economy, society, and demographics, often used by researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners.
