What is a Digital Footprint?

A digital footprint refers to the trail of information you leave behind whenever you use the internet. This includes anything from social media posts, online purchases, emails, website visits, or even background data collected when you browse.

There are two main types:

Active Digital Footprint

Information you deliberately share online.
Examples: Posting photos, writing tweets, updating LinkedIn profiles, or commenting on a YouTube video.
These are intentional and within your control.

Passive Digital Footprint

Data collected about you without direct input.
Examples: Websites tracking your browsing history, apps recording your location, or cookies monitoring your preferences.

Every online action contributes to your digital reputation, which can either open doors or create obstacles.

Education (School/College): Admissions officers sometimes review applicants’ social media profiles. A positive digital footprint (e.g., showcasing community projects or academic interests) can strengthen applications, while inappropriate content can harm chances.
