Engaging: Stories capture attention in ways raw statistics cannot. A story frames the data in a human context, making it relatable.
Memorable: People tend to remember narratives more than spreadsheets. For example, “1 in 5 children miss school due to illness” becomes more memorable if framed as, “Imagine a classroom of 25 students; 5 of them are absent because they are too sick to attend.”
Persuasive: A well-structured story can move people from awareness to decision-making. It helps audiences feel the urgency behind the numbers.

The “Data Storytelling Framework”

A simple structure to turn data into a narrative is:

Context: Define the background and why the data matters. (What problem or question are we exploring?)
Insight: Highlight the key findings. (What patterns or surprises did the data reveal?)
Recommendation: Conclude with a clear call-to-action. (What should the audience do with this information?)

This framework ensures your story doesn’t stop at “what happened” but moves toward “what next.”

Identifying Your Audience and Tailoring the Message

The same data story must be told differently depending on the audience:

Executives: Want a concise, high-level summary with clear recommendations. Focus on implications for business or policy decisions.
Technical Teams: Prefer detailed analysis, methods, and accuracy. They care about how conclusions were drawn and may want supporting datasets.
General Public: Need simple language, relatable analogies, and engaging visuals. Avoid jargon and focus on impact.

Using Narrative Flow

A good data story has a flow similar to traditional storytelling:

Beginning (Problem/Question): Introduce the challenge or question driving the analysis.
Middle (Findings/Insights): Present the evidence and trends uncovered.
End (Recommendations/Action): Provide a conclusion that guides decisions or inspires change.

Visuals should not stand alone but support the narrative.

Statistical Summary (Dry):

“In 2024, 40% of small businesses in Lagos reported a decline in sales, compared to 25% in 2023. The largest drop was in retail, where 55% reported reduced revenue.”

Narrative for Executives:

“Small businesses in Lagos are struggling, and the situation is worsening. In just one year, the number of businesses reporting declining sales jumped from 1 in 4 to nearly 2 in 5. Retail is hit hardest, with more than half of shop owners reporting lower revenue. If this trend continues, job losses and closures will follow. We recommend immediate support programs targeting retail businesses, including low-interest credit and digital adoption incentives.”

Narrative for General Public:

“Imagine walking down your street and seeing two out of every five small shops struggling to stay open. That’s the reality today in Lagos; business owners are selling less than last year, and retail shops are suffering the most. Over half of them say they’re making less money. If nothing changes, many of these familiar stores could disappear. Supporting small businesses now means protecting jobs, families, and the heartbeat of our communities.”
