Critical thinking isn’t about being negative or overly skeptical, it’s about being thoughtful and intentional in how you approach information. It’s the ability to analyze information objectively, consider multiple perspectives, and make reasoned judgments instead of just accepting things at face value.

Why It Matters

We are surrounded by information such as news reports, workplace memos, social media posts, and even everyday conversations. Without critical thinking, it’s easy to get misled or make poor decisions. With it, we can cut through the noise, evaluate facts carefully, and make better choices in life and work.

Asking Questions

Don’t just accept information because it came from an authority figure or popular source. Ask: Is this accurate? What’s the evidence?

Identifying Biases and Assumptions

Everyone has biases, including ourselves. Recognize when opinions are being presented as facts and check your own assumptions too.

Reflection Prompt: What’s one personal bias you’ve noticed in yourself when making decisions?

Weighing Evidence

Strong decisions come from strong evidence. Compare sources, check credibility, and look for supporting data before drawing conclusions.

Mini-Activity: The next time you read an article, check at least two other sources covering the same topic. Did they align or differ?

Thinking Logically while Staying Open-Minded

Logic keeps your reasoning sound, but open-mindedness allows you to fairly consider new or opposing ideas.

Example:

A student working on a research paper about climate change. Instead of relying on a single blog post or opinion piece, the student:

Reviews multiple academic sources,
Cross-checks data from credible organizations,
Considers different viewpoints, and
Forms a balanced conclusion based on evidence rather than opinion.

That process of questioning, evaluating, and concluding fairly is critical thinking in action.
